Consignment of human eye corneas donated by Sri Lanka to Pakistan

Another consignment of human eye corneas donated by Sri Lanka to Pakistan was handed over by the High Commissioner to Pakistan, Admiral (Retired) Ravi Wijegunaratne to Brigadier (Dr.) Waquar Muzaffer Commandant and the Dean of the AFIO (Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology) at Rawalpindi on 12 July 2024. This marks the donation of second consignment within a month after the resumption of cornea donation which halted for few years due to Covid outbreak and some other administrative reasons.

These corneas, donated by deceased individuals in Sri Lanka to be transplanted on gallant Pakistan Army personnel who lost their eye sight due to terrorist activities, retired Pakistan Military personnel and also to needy family members of the military.

High Commissioner was accompanied by Brigadier Kaminda Silva, the Defence Adviser of Sri Lanka High Commission in Islamabad and later they witnessed Pakistan Military Eye Specialist transplanting eye corneas to patients at state-of- the- art Operation theaters at Military Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi.

The coordination and funding for transferring these ten eye corneas were done by Mr Idris Admani, the President Sri Lanka- Pakistan Friendship Society with liaison Eye Donation Society of Sri Lanka.
