A group of Sri Lankan students from various universities in Lahore, Punjab Province of Pakistan, had the opportunity to meet with Hon. (Dr.) Jagath Wickramaratne, Speaker of the Parliament, who led the Sri Lankan delegation to Pakistan for the 1st Joint CPA Asia & South-East Asia Regional Conference, held from 6th to 10th February 2025 in Lahore. The meeting took place on 9th February 2025 at the office of the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Lahore.
The delegation included Hon. Mulaffer Mohamed Muneer, MP, Deputy Minister of National Integration; Hon. Ms. Tushari Jayasinghe, MP; Hon. Mr. Janath Chithral Fernando, MP; Mr. Karunanathan Ilankumaran, MP; and Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, Secretary General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by Mr. Yasin Joyia, the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Lahore, along with his staff members. During the meeting, the delegation engaged in a productive discussion with Sri Lankan students studying at various universities in Lahore. Key concerns were addressed, including academic opportunities, visa-related challenges, and the overall well-being of Sri Lankan students in Pakistan.
The meeting provided a valuable platform for students to voice their concerns and receive support from their government representatives. Acting High Commissioner A. Chirty Ruban assured the students of continued assistance and emphasized the government’s commitment to improving educational experiences and career opportunities for Sri Lankan students in Pakistan.
The delegation also reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries. The interaction with students underscored the importance of fostering academic collaboration, scholarship opportunities, and enhancing initiatives for student welfare.
In closing, the students expressed their gratitude to Hon. Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, the delegation, Acting High Commissioner, and the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Lahore for their guidance and support.
